Fly Fishing in Salt Waters Magazine

When turning to page ten in my Fly Fishing in Salt Waters Magazine, I was surprised to see a picture I took of a client of mine, Mike Roth. He was holding a big bluefish he had caught on the fly with me last season in Montauk. I agree with Mike; it is a wonderful magazine. Our models that day (the fish) were cooperative even if the weather wasn't. (at the start of the day it was blowing close to thirty knots!)

Flats Fishing Continues

Fished last night with Rich and Jerry. We fished sunset and the stripers were feeding well. The wind dropped out and it was flat calm at sunset. We brought six stripers and one bluefish to the boat. All on poppers. Great bites.

Back Bay Action

Fished with Tom and Bruce today. We started out putting lots of miles on the regulator to see what was going on in the ocean. The answer was not much but it will happen soon. We recovered by coming in and switching boats and hopping in the skiff. We ended up with over a dozen stripers on poppers and one bluefish. The fish are feeding well in the shallows and will continue to do so for some time.

Montauk Gale

Fished Sunday with Peter and Anthony in Montauk. It was literally blowing a gale but these guys are die hards. With winds gusting over thirty knots we managed to salvage the day with five stripers when most others stayed home. Nice work guys.

Montauk Wind

Fished Montauk today with Peter and Anthony. I had advised them of the weather forecast. They wanted to go anyway. So I took them. Woke up to westerly 25 knots, gusting over 30. Couldn't get to the Point, not an option. Went to an alternate ramp in the lee of the blow and fished some spots I have out of the wind. We released around 20 stripers. Some on the fly and most on the jig. Not big but it beats sitting in the motel. I'm pretty sure less than five boats even fished. That's amazing considering hundreds usually are out on a Saturday. I guarantee we were the smallest boat fishing.

Florida

Fishing is still white hot in Montauk and the awesome November and December fishing in Sea Isle is yet to come but winter is rapidly approaching. That makes me think of Florida and fishing in Islamorada. As always I am offering two or three day weekend trips. We fish all day or as much as you can handle. It is a great mini vacation. I can arrange lodging and make flight arrangements if needed. Give me a call at 609-827-3442 or shoot me an email if you are interested. Check the previous wintertime blog posts to see examples of the action. You can also search the blog. (righthand side bottom. Type Islamorada). Advance booking receives better pricing.

Montauk Monday

Fished with the same crew Monday. Lost count of the albies in the morning. Caught a bunch of blues as well pushing ten pounds. The stripers cooperated later in the day and we had a bunch of fish to about 16 pounds or so. Videos will follow. It was a spectacle.

Montauk

Fished today with Darryl, Matt, and Patty. It was epic. We easily had over 60 fish including stripers, albies, and blues. Each angler recorded multiple slams. We even had a bonito. (see bottom pic). The biggest striper was around 17 pounds.

Montauk Slam

We had multiple slams on Saturday with albies, stripers, and blues caught by Matt and Darryl.

A Lot Part Three

Note the enormous porgy. I think it was the biggest one I ever saw. Pushing four pounds.

A Lot Part Two

More Montauk pics from this weekend. Note the breaking fish in front of the lighthouse.

A Lot

Fished with Darryl and Matt in Montauk. It was epic. Not sure on exact numbers...lost count. Well over 50 fish. We had albies, blues, and stripers all day. Both of them had slams. We simply moved from blitz to blitz. More pics to follow.

Stripers on the Fly

Fished last night with Chuck K. We flyfished the flats. Chuck caught his first striper ever on the fly. We had multiple bites but we only brought that one to the boat. We did have a period of blitzing fish right after dark and that is when Chuck scored. I remember my first striper. Do you?

More Montauk Albies

Fished the last day with Mike. We got out early and the fish cooperated again. We ended up releasing between 12-14 albies on the fly and called it a day around noon. Fishing was excellent.
